Unofficially referred to as the “Little Monument”, this landmark is dedicated to the early sailplane flights that occurred here.

It is easy to miss as you enter the park. It is on the right hand side of the road, just pass the road to Upper Maintenance, and just before the road going down to the tidepools.

The plaque is dedicated to the pilots William Hawley Bowlus and John C. Barstow who made milestone flights in sailplane history at this site. Other pilots, including the Lindberghs, are remembered as well, flying after them. Bowlus, in 1929, was the first to exceed one hour in flight. Barstow, in 1930, exceeded 15 hours, setting a world record.

The landmark was dedicated in April 1996. You can read more about the landmark on the National Soaring Museum website.
