Hopkin’s Rose Nudibranch
Okenia rosacea

A bright pink sea anemone with long, soft tentacles spreads out like a flower on a dark rock underwater.

Commonly found in the middle to low intertidal from Oregon to Baja California, the Hopkin’s Rose Nudibranch can grow as long as 2.5 cm (1 inch). The Hopkin’s Rose Nudibranch is bright pink and has long tentacle-like structures, like the stinging tentacles of anemones, to deter predators.

Nudibranchs, also known as sea slugs, are snails without shells.

The Hopkin’s Rose Nudibranch gets its bright pink color from feeding on bryozoans.

The Hopkin’s Rose Nudibranch has rhinophores, similar to noses, that they use to sense their environment.

The Hopkin’s Rose Nudibranch, along with the other flora and fauna, is a protected species at Cabrillo.
