Wrong Date and Time was Previously Announced

The date that was previously announced for the Fireworm display should have been for September 16th. We have updated the information below.

Parking Update Due to Construction (8/20/2026)

The city has fenced-in area in front of pier. It’s some big civic project. Not sure if this fencing will still be there in September.

This is what people can do if attending the fireworm watching event:
1. Pull in left off Mission Bay Drive past “Boat Launch” sign into the parking lot. When you see the metal fencing, park before the fence. Just walk toward the water & then walk toward the pier. Ignore the signs for a walking detour. Mary will wait in the parking lot by the fence to gather everyone.

Fireworms are mating!

If you are interested in watching small worms mating & glowing like green light sticks now is the season. VIP Mary has selected September 16th for the more intense light show. These fireworms or glowworms, Odontosyllis phosphorea, swim up from the bottom to mate on the surface water for half an hour. When thousands of these worms glow, it makes for a wonderful show!

September 16 meet at 6:30 pm at De Anza Cove LAUNCH PIER. This is just North of Superbloom Coffee & juice (old information visitor center).
 
The worms show half hour to 40 minutes after sunset, which occurs at 6:54pm.

A Map for the event is shown below. If interested, she have a few show and tell items to explain bioluminescence and how many objects, chemicals, and products give off a different glow of phosphorescence & chemiluminescence.
