Last month we reported on weirdness in the tidepools due to effects from El Niño. We have a followup to that post along with a warning for volunteers and visitors.
Yesterday (10/26), TPERP Denine spotted something blue in the water at the Zone1/2 boundary. At first she thought it as a Velella Velella, But as she got closer she saw that it wasn’t a Velella Velella. She wasn’t sure but thought she knew. She took photos and when she got home she uploaded the photos to iNaturalist.
Sure enough it was identified as a Portuguese man-o-war jellyfish! Take a look at these photos that TPERP Denine took. Also included is a link to other photos on iNaturalist.
Please be aware that Portuguese man-o-war jellyfish are venomous and require immediate medical attention if stung. Please watch your footing, wear appropriate PPE, and warn visitors when in the tidepools.
As we have stated before, watch for more weirdness in the tidepools and around the park. Don’t assume you are looking at the “normal” things. If you see anything weird, try to take photos and alert park staff as well.

Saw a Northern Kelp Crab on Sunday – first time ever.
