
Our client, the California Wildlife Foundation (CWF) is looking to fill a Tidepool Protection, Education, and Restoration (TPERP) Coordinator role. This position is located at Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego, CA. The work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday; 40 hours per week; anticipated through April 2027, with the possibility of extension.
Overview
The Program Coordinator supports visitor engagement, resource protection, and public education within the rocky intertidal zone at Cabrillo National Monument. This area, one of the best-preserved rocky intertidal ecosystems on the Southern California mainland, attracts more than 380,000 annual visitors. The role enhances visitor safety, understanding, and appreciation of local marine life while coordinating a large tidepool volunteer corps.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide informal interpretation and visitor education at tidepools, along the Coastal Trail, and at a designated education table.
- Deliver engaging, accurate information about local marine life, park safety, and intertidal resource protection.
- Staff high-visitation periods, including weekends and low-tide weekdays.
- Serve as primary coordinator for a volunteer program of 50–100 individuals who collectively provide interpretation to more than 37,000 visitors annually.
- Train, schedule, support, and supervise volunteers.
- Develop and refine interpretive materials and educational tools (e.g., tactile marine animal models).
- Organize and deliver an annual public science education symposium for approximately 200 volunteers and visitors, highlighting research at Cabrillo National Monument.
- Help maintain a positive, safe visitor experience; monitor conditions in the tidepool area; and communicate safety guidelines.
- Contribute to resource protection by educating visitors on responsible recreation and Leave No Trace practices.
- Collaborate with NPS staff and partners to support visitor services and interpretive initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Experience in environmental education, interpretation, marine science, or a related field.
- Strong communication and public engagement skills, with comfort speaking to groups of all sizes.
- Ability to work outdoors in variable coastal conditions and navigate uneven terrain.
- Experience coordinating volunteers or leading teams.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage schedules, events, and multiple priorities.
- Interest in coastal ecosystems, conservation, and public service.
